Unit 4 · Lesson 5
A full conversation
about 7 min · Goal: Follow a twelve-line café conversation and supply the fitting reply, word order and particle at each turn
Meeting on the street
- A 지아 씨, 안녕하세요.Hello, Jia.
- B 안녕하세요, 민수 씨. 어디 가요?Hello, Minsu. Where are you going?
- A 카페에 가요. 지아 씨는 오늘 뭐 해요?I’m going to a café. What are you doing today, Jia?
- B 저는 오늘 일 안 해요.I’m not working today.
Minsu and Jia run into each other. Read the four lines; every piece is one you have practised. 지아 씨 and 민수 씨 do the work of “you”. 어디 가요? is answered with a place + 에 가요.
In the last line, 오늘 stands without a particle, and 안 sits between 일 and 해요: 저는 오늘 일 안 해요, “I’m not working today”.
Do first: Time and your day

Meeting on the street
Minsu and Jia run into each other. Read the four lines; every piece is one you have practised. 지아 씨 and 민수 씨 do the work of “you”. 어디 가요? is answered with a place + 에 가요.
In the last line, 오늘 stands without a particle, and 안 sits between 일 and 해요: 저는 오늘 일 안 해요, “I’m not working today”.
A suggestion, and three new words
그럼 means “then, in that case”. 같이 means “together” and is pronounced [가치]. 같이 가요 uses the ordinary verb 가요: said to another person, it works as “let’s go together”. No special form is needed.
좋아요 [조아요] means “it is good”, and as a reply, “sounds good”. Keep it apart from 좋아해요, “to like something”, which needs an object with 을/를.
뭐 마셔요? is literally “what do you drink?” — here, “what will you have?”
Ordering and saying goodbye
Minsu calls the server with 여기요 and orders with thing + number + counter + 주세요. Jia says 커피가 맛있어요 and thanks him; the reply to thanks is 아니에요.
Both say 안녕히 가세요, because both are leaving the café and neither stays behind. 내일 봐요 is “see you tomorrow”: 내일 plus 봐요, the verb you know as “watch, see”.
What to remember
- You can follow and take part in a full conversation: greet, ask, suggest, order, thank and say goodbye.
- 그럼 is “then”, 같이 is “together”, 좋아요 is “sounds good”.
- 같이 가요 uses the ordinary verb form to say “let’s go together”.
Easy to mix up
- 좋아요 is “it is good”. 좋아해요 is “like” and takes 을/를.
- 같이 is pronounced [가치].
- When both people leave, both say 안녕히 가세요.
